Casually look around in a crowded room. People talking, people laughing, people walking around in a frenzy. Those are the given, of course. Look deeper into the crowd, there’s one common thing that is always seen. A tiny blue bird. Twitter.
Whether it is on someones smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc., students at Blue Valley Southwest High School say, Twitter is everywhere. Even if you’re not a big fan, there are still some ways Twitter can be useful.
“Most teachers have it and they post stuff about lessons and homework,” freshman Carter Yancey said. “It’s a good reminder if you forgot to do something.”
Other students disagree with Yancey.
“It isn’t beneficial unless you use it for the right reasons,” freshman Cassie Petrillo said.
Even students who don’t have a twitter agree with Petrillo.
“I think it is pointless and confusing,” freshman Kelyn Lynch said. “And the people that use it usually tweet a lot because they think other people care about what they have to say but in reality others actually don’t care.”
Whatever someones feelings may be towards Twitter, a common thought is that it is way overused.
“I got my account because everyone else had one, so I thought it was going to be fun. But it isn’t because it is ridiculous how many people have a Twitter,” Petrillo said. “So yes, I think it is overused.”
Yancey agrees with Petrillo, and Blue Valley Southwest’s Associate Principal Lisa Wilson also agrees with Petrillo.
“It is overused, just not in the productive ways.” Wilson said.
Overused or not, people seemed to disagree on if it causes more good or harm in our society.
“I definitely think it causes more harm in our society,” Petrillo said. “People get bullied, judged
and laughed at every day on Twitter.”
Opposition of thoughts between Yancey and Petrillo.
“It causes both harm and good,” Yancey said. “But it causes more good.”
Wilson sees what goes on in the hallways of high school with bullying and drama caused by Twitter.
“It can be used in inappropriate ways,” Wilson said. “It is really frustrating to see students using an app used for communication in the wrong way.”
Overall, mixed emotions about this supposed harmless little bird occur, but the more and more people that get accounts, the more mixed up it gets. Causing more and more distraction to students every day creates the question, is Twitter really a good thing?
