The Blue Valley Southwest Math Department hosted Pi day on Wednesday, March 9.
Pi is a formula used to find the diameter of a circle. The shortened version of this formula is commonly known as 3.14, and Math Departments in many other schools celebrate March 14 by bringing in pies and other circular desserts.
All of the math teachers during each hour of the day brought all of their classes into one big room and had a hula-hoop contest, a pie eating contest and a form of musical chairs with the prize being a 2-liter bottle of soda.
Math teacher Holly McCarty’s favorite part is the pie eating contest.
“It’s funny watching the kids eat the pie and get it all in their face,” she said. “It’s surprising how fast they can eat it too.”
Sophomore Michael Dula enjoyed taking a break of the normal math class.
“I love pie,” he said. “Pi day has so many fun activities to do with your friends, and the best part is winning the soda.”
McCarty’s favorite memory was last year’s Blue Valley High School pi day.
“Last year a lot of people brought those big cupcakes and Mr. Shipley and I shared one,” she said. “I just remember it being really yummy.”
