For the first time in school history, a girls tennis athlete reached 100 career wins. Senior Jensen Gibbs was the one to achieve this feat.
“It is a really cool accomplishment. I didn’t think I was going to [do it] freshman year, but I was always reaching toward it after my junior year,” Gibbs said.
Gibbs has been playing tennis for 14 years and said she enjoys it.
“I was 3 and a half when I started,” Gibbs said. “My mom was a college tennis player, so I kind of just took after her.”
Head coach Margaret Davidson said Gibbs consistently worked hard in the off season and that is how she was able to compete at the state level.
“[Gibbs] placed sixth at State her freshman year, taking first or second in our regional so she’s always kind of been at the top there,” Davidson said. “This year, we’re hoping to get her in the top three. Each year, she comes back stronger and better than ever, and has always played very top quality tennis.”
Both Davidson and Gibbs said they were happy with how the tennis team has done this year.
“As a whole, the program’s done really, really well. The girls placed third [in the] EKL,” Davidson said. “We’ve won multiple tournaments, and we’ve traveled to regionals. We took first as a team, which is the first time the girls tennis program has won regionals.”
Gibbs and the other team members compete at State today and tomorrow. She said staying in it was hard, but it was worth it.
“I know it can get tough sometimes, but it’s worth it, especially accomplishing the things that you never thought you’d accomplish,” Gibbs said.
