The boys soccer team pulled off its first win of the season on Friday, Aug. 28 at Bishop Miege. The two teams both started the game with a lot of energy and speed. Southwest had many chances in the penalty box but was unable to finish a goal. Meanwhile, goalkeeper senior Corbett Oliver’s quick hands on his line and Southwest’s solid defense kept the score 0-0 at halftime.
It wasn’t until 26:50 left in the second half that Southwest scored from a play by senior Jacob Weaver, who kicked the ball up and around the player defending him and buried the ball in the corner of the goal. Southwest held off Miege for the rest of the half, and the game ended 1-0.
In the preseason rankings published by the coaches association, the boys soccer team was ranked second in class 5A for the state of Kansas, only behind St. Thomas Aquinas. Friday’s win put the team at a 1-0 start for the season as it next takes on Lansing on Monday Aug 31.
