On Feb. 20 Southwest varsity girls basketball team will be playing their last home game. Winning against North earlier in the season, hopefully Southwest will stick to their title.

Winning by 25 and being in the lead three  out of four quarters of the game, Head Coach Rick Rhoades believes the team has a great chance of winning.

“We have improved a lot this season,” Rhodes said. “We have big expectations for our girls.”

Lauren York, varsity player, knows her team has struggles.

“Beginning of the 4th we seem to slow down and not pick up our aggressiveness,” York said.

Southwest is very aggressive as they foul 10 times during their game North fouled at least  13 times. Southwest still has control. Their defense is intense while their offense keeps them leading the game.

“We have a great coach who knows amazing offensive and defensive plays. Plus with North we have multiple mismatches because of the height on out team,” Laura Eldredge, varsity player, said.

In the first quarter the varsity girls seem to lack points as North was in the lead with the score 8-4. Within the 2nd quarter we scored 17 points putting us in the lead.

“First four minutes we have to come out stronger,” Eldredge said. “Beginning of the game we have to be fired up.”

Second highest scorer, Taylor Westrom, scored a total of 15 points. She scored more than anyone in the 3rd and 4th quarter keeping the lead and eventually winning the game.

“A team means a group effort,” Westrom said. “Not one person can win the game.”

With a high chance of winning, Southwest doesn’t expect  to be beat on their ground. Especially if they win, they will locked third seed for sub state.
