On Monday 14 the Southwest golf team played in the regional tournament in Emporia. On top of shooting the best scores that they have all year round, as a team they placed first in regionals, which gave them they’re spot in the state tournament.
“It was a little bittersweet because last year we got second by one shot,” golf coach Nate Winslow said.
The team was excited about the win and hold high expectations about winning in the state tournament.
“We do have high expectations, and hopefully we can play our bests again.” Winslow said.
Travis Mays placed 1st in the tournament, at Regionals he played his personal best and has set his sights on the State tournament.
“I would think Travis [Mays] has the expectations of winning the whole tournament.”
With their sights set on the state tournament, the team practices and aims for a high ranking this year.
“I would love to get the top five, but there’s so many great teams, we felt we had a great chance last year but we finished in seventh.” Winslow said. “The thing with the Kansas Golf State Tournament is its only one day, and if you have an off day it’s tough to meet your goals I guess, so we’ll see what happens.”
