Kansas City has the Chiefs and the Royals, but isn’t represented in the way of National League Hockey. On Sept. 27, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings traveled to the Sprint Center to take place in an exhibition preseason game.
This is the third year of preseason hockey at the Sprint Center and was sold out.
“I’ve been to professional games before and I loved them,” senior Maren Ozier said. “They are so fast paced and you just get so into them.”
Exhibition games are held to see if a city has enough fans and support for a team. The Penguins were included in talks last year of a possible move to Kansas City which was a big part in their coming for a preseason game this year.
“I think KC should get into the hockey world because it’s so much fun and so different from other sports,” Ozier said.
The game started with a goal from Los Angeles center Jarret Stoll and was the only goal in the first period. The Penguins found their way to the board during the third period with goals from defenseman Deryk Engelland and left wing Chris Kunitz. The game went into overtime after a late third period goal by Kings defenseman Alec Martinez. After a scoreless overtime, the game went into an eight round shootout that was finally ended by a goal by Penguins defenseman Matt Niskanen.
