With the end of the school year quickly approaching, it’s time to reflect on all the major events, especially with field day coming up. The one thing people think of when the traditional American high school experience comes to mind is the outgoing crowds at games and assemblies. However, lately, it feels the school lacks some of that energy.
While the outside world does affect things within the school building, the student body is becoming more and more divided each year, with students only seeming to care about themselves and activities they’re involved in, and not with the school as a whole. This is really upsetting to see at school activities, such as last year’s field day and assemblies throughout the year. While they can sometimes be slow and dull, I truly believe that if everyone tried to look at it in a more positive aspect, it could be more fun. WPC members try really hard to make it the best experience as well as the staff, but with that, the long list of rules and limitations on what’s considered appropriate does hurt students’ abilities to keep celebrations fun and up to date.
As a whole, if the majority of students showed up and put more effort into participating in school events, from the HoCo dance to assemblies, it would be overall more enjoyable. Of course, with social media and a new mentality that everything is embarrassing, it is hard to really see students put themselves out there to do things that might be cringy even if they enjoy it.
While the scheduling and groupings for field day are not ideal because you’re not always with your friends, it is a great example if people do try hard enough and see past the more negative aspects, and just let loose, the day can be fun. School spirit is something that highlights the high school experience, and when different classes and the school as a whole come together to celebrate, it is rewarding and fun. For it to be a success, though, everyone needs to try and be involved.
In the end, if every individual decides to put just a little extra energy into the field day or even the next assembly, it really will make it overall more exciting. Being a little louder for the chant, truly cheering on your fellow classmates and being respectful to everyone who is trying in a game or anyone who helped put together an activity will heighten everyone’s moods.
