Valentine’s Day is a way for many to celebrate love and their relationships. However, for others, it’s a day that potentially brings up feelings of loneliness and what they might not have. For me, I think it’s a meaningless and fake holiday.
The holiday is a way for businesses to overprice small items like flowers and chocolate. For example, the national average this year for a dozen red roses is $90, according to CBS News, with the highest cost being in the states of Hawaii, $143, Texas, $110, and Washington, $106. In Kansas, the cost this year is around $100. Spending this amount of money on something that will die in a matter of days is outrageous.
Along with this, the marketing in stores creates a false need for items you normally wouldn’t give a second thought such as a teddy bear. It is pushed into your face even just by walking into a grocery store with a big section at the front, making you feel the need to buy such things.
Many use the holiday as an excuse to go overboard, buying extravagant gifts that could otherwise be used for a more special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary gift. Not only do stores push it on you, but social media is a place for people to show their over-the-top Valentine’s Day proposals and dates that are honestly unnecessary and ridiculous.
The only gift that should be given on Valentine’s Day is a card and a small flower bouquet as all of the extra stuff is just unneeded.
