This past weekend, the Chiefs beat the Bills in the NFL playoffs, making them the AFC champions for the fifth time in the last six years. After winning the game, they are set to play the Eagles at the Super Bowl on Feb. 9 for a second time. This will be the Chiefs’ third Super Bowl in a row which if they win will be the first three peat in NFL history. However, with all these recent dominations in the last few years, the Chiefs and KC area have received not-so-great media attention from the rest of the nation.
Many can remember how it felt when the Patriots were at the top of the NFL, and everyone, including the Chiefs, were praying for their downfall. However, now it seems the Chiefs have almost switched positions and are now the top dogs everyone seems to hate.
As someone who only really watches football for the Chiefs, I find it hard to say what an actual sports perspective looks like. It’s interesting seeing how the Chiefs went from non-existent at the Super Bowl to constantly in the spotlight. Of course, from an outside perspective, it must be frustrating watching the same team dominate each year and trying to call the games “rigged.”
Many people have developed a strong opinion of the team members, specifically the Mahomes family and Travis Kelce because of Taylor Swift. In all honesty, yes, the Chiefs shouldn’t only be about the girlfriends and wives, but clearly whatever the players are doing is working.
So yes, for non-Chiefs fans, it might not be the best seeing them go to the playoffs and Super Bowl constantly, but they weren’t winning anything for a while. It got to the point many people didn’t think they would even have the opportunities that they are getting now. Hate them or love them, the team works hard and the parades, tailgating and celebrations are fun for the whole city and frankly, most fans could care less about all the other teams and crazy fans.
It’s important to keep in mind that just like the Patriots, this streak won’t last forever. Watching the Chiefs grow and gain popularity for the KC metro has been incredible. Again, it makes the Super Bowl even more exciting watching your team at the big game especially when the rest of the country is against them. Getting a day off school or work and celebrating with the city is something many might take for granted. Therefore, let’s hope the Chiefs do get that back-to-back-to-back win.
