About every month some new band, artist, or song becomes extremely viral. It doesn’t matter when the song came out or how long the artist/artists behind it have been around, your favorite song will become overused and basic. That isn’t to say basic songs are bad, they simply become cliché.
Many people refer to ruined songs as “TikTokified,” meaning that the song was so overplayed on TikTok that it becomes associated with a trend or even time period of the year. While these trends can be fun, people will overhype the song because of how viral everything is. Users will become obsessed with a mediocre song that is severely overplayed for no reason.
The second something goes viral, it doesn’t take but three to seven days for some video to pop up on your FYP with the song either in an edit, dance, or just a simple lip sync. Songs become reverbed, lyrics are changed or misinterpreted and a song you once adored will be all over the internet until the next one comes along. While this can be an opportunity for the musicians, random fans will come along, obsessing over a song they only know about 10 seconds of.
Over the summer songs such as “FE!N”, “Carnival”, “They Not Like Us”, “Espresso” and “Pink Skies” were trending. All are good songs with good beats or lyrics, but only the small clips get played over and over.
“Carnival” and “Pink Skies” were both songs that had trends with them however the other songs were primarily just played for other reasons such as edits and lip-syncs. When things are made into dances/trends or edit audios the songs are reverbed or mashed which takes away from the original sound. Instrumentals will be sped up and lyrics get changed or not properly understood and it ruins the entire purpose of the art behind the song.
Yet what has to be the most annoying thing of all are the fake fans. Someone who hears part of a song then says they love it but can’t name the artist, name of the song, or sing the rest of the lyrics just proves that making songs viral really just ruins them. Not only the song in general but for the people who originally liked it. People can’t admire a song for the entire duration anymore and it’s sad to see other good lyrics and parts of songs go to waste people just wait for the few seconds they know.
In the end, trends are fun to do and the platform is based around music but that should really just allow people to experience new and different music instead id of playing one song for an entire month.
