Echosmith delves the music industry with indie rock album

The American indie rock band Echosmith brings a whole new definition to siblings getting along. Consisting of the four Sierota siblings Jamie, Noah, Sydney and Graham, Echosmith dove into America’s radios and top music charts this past summer. Their debut album, Talking Dreams which included two hit songs “Cool Kids” and “Bright”, was released Oct. 8, 2013 but has recently gained recognition, and it’s clear to see why.

Talking Dreams can be described as a perfect mix and balance between indie-pop and indie-rock. The 12 tracks perfectly showcase the band’s alternative style and versatility as artists throughout the genre. The album exemplifies the mellifluous voice of the only female and lead singer Sydney and the blending harmonies of Noah and Jamie.

It starts off with with “Come Together” which included light percussion and a sudden bang leading to a more upbeat song which epitomized the album.

By the third song, it was clear that the album theme was uplifting and individualized freedom. With multiple love songs like “Bright” and “Tell Her You Love Her”, it puts a smile on the listener’s face.

The whole album had a coffee shop, carefree summer aura that celebrated youth and life in general. While the album’s sound became a bit repetitive at points, it had different background percussion so that it could either be “headbanging” music or “sit back and relax” music.

Some of the highlights of the album came at the beginning with “March Into the Sun” and “Let’s Love”.

The album ended with “Surround You”, a lullaby- like song that invoked bittersweet feelings. Almost as if it was the end of summer camp or graduation, “Surround You” had a reassuring message and soothing harmonies to accompany it.

Talking Dreams deserved the recognition it got, if not more. Versatile, calming and rocking, this album was a joy to listen to and a new addition to my iPod. I’m proud to say Echosmith succeeded in gaining a new fan.
