Nothing Bundt Cakes provides savory treats in a homey setting
It’s been cold and gray outside, but the interior of Nothing Bundt Cakes provides a stark contrast to Overland Park’s winter weather. The colors are bright, the music is cheerful and a platter of sample cakes sits in the corner. The woman behind the counter offers me one, and I decline sadly, wishing that I liked chocolate because the tiny morsels look delicious.
Located conveniently near 135th and Metcalf, this location of Nothing Bundt Cakes is one of a large chain started by Dena Tripp and Debbie Schwetz in 1977. The two-woman effort grew into a nationwide franchise that has been featured in various food shows and magazines as well as appearing at celebrity parties. However, the shop itself feels like a local business – the perfect blend between homey and professional. I am offered a selection of cakes in various sizes – a single-serving “bundlet,” a package of a dozen bite-sized “bundtinis,” or larger cakes meant to serve many people. The variety of flavors is also overwhelming – even a picky eater such as myself has a difficult time choosing – and gluten-free options are also available. I eventually settle on a lemon bundlet, which I manage to scarf down in about two minutes flat. Although it is packaged, it tastes like it has just come out of the oven – a rich cream cheese icing covers a savory cake, and I immediately promise myself to come back another time to try another. And, ever accommodating, Nothing Bundt Cakes also sells supplies – candles, balloons and serving packages – in case you want to serve their product at a party.
