For those interested in becoming a vegetarian or simply living healthier Sheridan’s Unforked, located at 7337 W.119th Street, may be a delicious option for you. This locally owned and operated restaurant prides itself on its support of regionally grown food.
The staff also only uses meat that is delivered daily and doesn’t contain any hormones or steroids. In addition the menu features a considerable amount of of gluten-free or vegetarian items so there is something for every diet.
As you pull into Unforked you can already tell that it is a stylish establishment. Even the drive-through along the side of the building is nicely decorated so before walking in you start to get a sense of the mood of the place. When going through the revolving door of the restaurant you immediately see the smiling face of an employee at the counter.
On the day I visited, the woman taking our order was very welcoming and eager. I even saw her asking several customers as they were leaving how their meals were and telling them to have a nice day. Consequently visitors left with a smiling face, which impressed me because it was a serve-yourself situation and she was the only one up front. Although we did not have somebody periodically filling up our drinks and checking up on us the employee did give the place a very welcoming feeling.
Toward the entrance, a supply of menus are hanging up on the wall for you to take and look over. The three most popular items on it are the Barking Pig Taco, the Conquistador Taco, and the Cali Taco. Take those options into consideration while deciding. When ready, simply order at the front desk then you’re free to pick your own seat. You’re also given a remote device to notify you when the order is ready.
The casual, no waiter environment might seem cheap at first, but the atmosphere in the place totally dissolves that notion. Soothing yet modern music is playing in the background and the place is well decorated in warm tones of brown, white, tan, and details of wood, which contrasts interestingly with the industrial accessories around the room.
Overall I felt relaxed and the scenery was nice to enjoy while waiting for my order.
After your remote buzzes and you collect your food, you’re ready to eat. I noticed that the size of my meal was very satisfying as well as healthy. My Porto Pure Burger was not too hearty or sparse, especially with the abundance of hand-cut french fries that came with it. Food comes in a basket on a tray, making it easy to carry to your seat. Although the container was plain, the food itself was very visually appealing.
There were lots of color in several of the dishes I saw; especially the Crispy Avocado Taco. Also, based on the accurate descriptions provided in the menu I was able to get exactly what I was expecting to. While enjoying your meal, feel free to refill your drink or gather any condiments at the station located near the front. Because the place was very spacious you weren’t waiting in line or bumping into anyone on the way.
If you chose to order dessert then you’ll become acquainted with Unforked’s frozen custard, made with only nine pure ingredients: milk, cream, egg, sugar and vanilla. Eggs which are hand gathered from straw-filled nests. Their smoothies are also prepared with 100 percent real fruit, so go ahead and splurge. During my visit I got to taste the Hunk of Love sundae which appeared to be made with a homemade cookie and real hot fudge. Highly recommended.
Unfortunately the restaurant does not have a kids menu which leads me to believe that it’s not a very family oriented place. Along with the fact that most of the items on the menu seemed a bit more sophisticated than the average fast food chain. The majority of the people I witnessed eating at the restaurant were younger couples or singles, which made for a much more peaceful atmosphere than other eateries. But when asking the employee about the kids menu she offered many alternatives that the kitchen staff could prepare. For example, she suggested a chicken tender meal that seems to be popular among most children. So although Unforked isn’t completely family-friendly, it does have the potential to be.
To summarize, Unforked is very high in health, taste and ambiance though falls short in being family friendly as well as the price. Though their rates would have been reasonable if you were being waited on, I feel as though it was a tad too much after having to throw away your own trash. Many people go to a restaurant to be served and relax which is what makes this a big concern. But with Unforked’s innovative passion for quality food it’s not an obstacle I think they can’t overcome.
