Seeing middle-aged men arguing on the television, it’s easy to just ignore their baritone voices and go on with your day.
Even at 18 years old, students are reluctant to breach to topic of politics with their peers. They have more important things to do; studying for tests or spending hours at football practice, they are too engrossed in trying to fight their way through high school. However, one of these men, these argumentative men, could eventually become the leader of the United States.
We aren’t children anymore; we’re transitioning into adulthood, and with adulthood comes the responsibility to know what is going on with the government.
Politics has to do with the government making decisions – decisions that will concern you. As an adult, you have the right to vote and with this right comes the necessity to know what you stand for.
Don’t blindly vote for a candidate that promises different things than you believe. Know what side of the political spectrum you’re on. Know if you are liberal or a conservative, whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, or even one of the lesser-known parties. It’s your job to stay informed.
Come on, Timberwolves. We range from 14-18 years of age. You should be able to tell what is going on with our government. While it may not always be the topic everyone wants to talk about, it would do well to know what bills the Senate plans on voting for, seeing as it is part of our future. Now scoff and shrug it off, but soon it will be laws affecting your life.
When the freshmen can’t list the Republican party candidates, it’s a problem. It is even more depressing when a senior states that they don’t know who the Vice-President is.
Seniors, you’re graduating and at 18, you do have a lot of rights and choices to make. You can fight for your country and make a decision about college, but you can’t make decisions about the country you inhabit. There’s something wrong with that.
Right now in the running for the Republican election, we have four candidates. One of these candidates will be running against Barack Obama for the position of President of the United States.
Of those two men, one will be leader of the land of the free. Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul are the four men squabbling over the right to call themselves “The Republican Candidate”.
We, the future leaders, need to comprehend politics because the decisions we make and the events that happen will impact us more than our parents.
They will impact our generation because we have so much ahead of us and we just can’t sit back and let others make decisions for us. It’s our life, so take the lead.
