Let me just start out by saying this: I’m a huge fan of Texas Longhorns football.
Game days? Best day of the week. A victory? My day gets exponentially better.
But too many people have written the team off this year. Why? Because we have a new quarterback.
The legendary Colt McCoy has graduated after an award-winning and record-breaking career and is replaced by Garrett Gilbert, a sophomore from Austin, Texas, who is most famous for his performance in the National Championship game last year against Alabama.
Gilbert, last year a true freshman with no starts to his name, almost led the Longhorns to victory against what is widely accepted to be the best defense in the country, as well as an offense led by Mark Ingram.
This year, the Longhorns are like us, here at Southwest.
They’re starting over; we’re starting up. Everyone has written them off to not win championships; people have done the same for us.
But, as the varsity soccer team proved in the first-ever sporting event held at Southwest, against Bishop Miege, we don’t deserve to be written off.
Cross country placed 2nd for both boys and girls in their first meet at Basehor-Linwood.
We’re better than getting written off. We’re the ones doing the writing.
Yes, we’re just getting started. But we’ve got great coaches and athletes who are excited to be wearing forest green, and they want your support. With a big enough student section, anything can and probably will happen.
It’s not going to come without effort on all sides, though. The EKL posts tremendous talent, as do the schools in surrounding areas.
Winning will not be done without a fight. Some of our sports programs may be facing some “building years,” but that’s not completely a bad thing. Losses make you want to win more.
If you think that after the National Championship game last year, the Longhorns went home and said, ‘Good job, let’s do that again next year,’ you are mistaken. They went home and then got back to work, planning on how to improve upon their performance in order to benefit this season.
Gilbert isn’t a rockstar. Mack Brown and his team know that, I know that, and so do athletes, coaches, critics and fans around the country.
But he’s solid. He will improve. Southwest is solid. We will improve.
We’ve already got great coaches and players; now we need to build great teams, programs and fan bases.
Win or lose, Southwest needs our support. If no one ever comes out and supports the tennis or cross country teams, what will be their motivation to improve?
Texas isn’t projected to win the National Championship this year, but they could get close. They’re the dark horse; so are we.
Even if other EKL or 4A teams have something our sports teams don’t, that’s no reason for their student sections to have something ours don’t: devoted fans. Get out there and support your school.
