The choir department’s Spotlight concert will take place on May 9 at 7:30 pm. The annual concert includes mostly pop music, rather than the formal pieces that the choirs perform for festivals and competitions. This year features some broadway hits and pop music from the ’80s and today.
“It’s the dessert concert for the year,” choral director Susan Scheibler said. “It’s lighter and just fun, especially coming off of contest when we work on really serious music. It’s kind of the antithesis to that.”
Songs will feature dance choreography and instruments, including percussion and electric, bass and acoustic guitar. And in addition to the large group numbers, seven soloists and a duet will perform.
“It’s not just completely cupcake music,” Scheibler said. “We have some old standards like ‘Landslide’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’—those are classic pop pieces. I think it’s kind of cool that we don’t have to do something crazy to make it worthwhile.”
Also featured in the concert is the senior video, a compilation of choir memories created by Elizabeth Peusar that leads to crying each year. Senior Katie Keck, a choir member every year since Kindergarten, expects the moment to be different now that it’s her last year in the program.
“I think I will just cherish the moment more,” senior Katie Keck said. “It was sad to see the seniors leave last year and the year before, but now that it’s me I’m just living and loving every minute of it because I won’t be able to ever again.”
