On Sunday, May 5, the Governor’s Luncheon in Topeka at Washburn University took place to recognize high school seniors’ achievements of being in the top one percent of their class.
541 seniors were in attendance from across the Kansas area. Of these 541, three were from Southwest: seniors Meg Huwe, Adrienne Taylor, and Lauren Tobin.
The ceremony was a chance to recognize these seniors and listen to various speakers from the Kansas government, including the Board of Education.
Also in attendance was Andover middle school teacher, Dyane Smokorowski. Smokorowski was named the 2013 Kansas Teacher of the Year and decided to speak at this luncheon.
After the speakers, seniors walked across the stage to shake these members of the government’s hands – among them was Governor Sam Brownback.
“I think it was an honor to get to met the Governor,” Tobin said. “It was nice to receive that level of recognition and meet people I never would have had the opportunity to meet.”
Each student was given a governor’s scholar pin at the end of the ceremony as well as a certificate.
“It was exciting to see all these other students and receive this honor,” Taylor said.
