HUBS is a support program offered every Wednesday for students to receive academic assistance. While it is mandatory for all freshmen, upperclassmen are dismissed from school at 2:20 p.m. unless they are assigned to HUBS. In the past, all students with grades of D’s or F’s — no matter what reason — were required to attend the 30-minute long session. Recently, rules have changed. Teachers and guidance counselors now spend their time reviewing each student’s progress in class, then decide if HUBS is truly mandatory for their specific needs. In addition, students attend HUBS with the teacher of the class they are struggling in.
“The idea behind HUBS is that if your grade is a D or an F because you’re simply not getting stuff in on time,” counselor Kristi Dixonsaid. “We can track you down at other times.”Failure to attend HUBS while it is assigned counts as an absence, leaving later consequences decided appropriately by the administration.
When you have a failing grade due to the fact that you were absent or missing for school, you still have to stay in assigned HUBS even if the missing assignments are just makeup work.
“We always give students a full week in between the posting of the grade and being assigned to HUBS,” Principal Scott Roberts said.
However, despite the new leeway, once placed in HUBS, students are expected to stay for four and a half weeks until grades are raised and reviewed again.
“I think it [HUBS] is definitely beneficial because it makes you focus and makes you do what you need to do.” junior Adrienne Taylor said.
