Prom is often imagined as a glamorous and magical night. However, rumors have been running around Blue Valley Southwest about less-than-sufficient funds, putting a damper on the common perception of this annual event.
One such rumor is that Southwest will be having prom in the gym.
“No, that definitely won’t be happening,” Prom committee president Maren Ozier said. “The district pre-set the venue and date so that is when and where it is going to be. No worries.”
The committee is determined to making the first prom at Southwest the best. They plan and oversee everything from the location to decorations to food and music.
“We just toured the Ritz-Charles so now we’re working on decoration plans,” Ozier said. “I found a really good DJ that I’m super excited about and we’re ordering tickets here within the next few weeks.”
Along with planning, the committee also budgets the event. Most students don’t realize how expensive prom can be, or that the committee started out with absolutely nothing.
“Trust me, I was shocked to find that out, too,” Ozier said.
However, there are ways to contribute: make a donation, buy one of the shirts or volunteer. The more students contribute, the better prom will be.
“Unfortunately [if there isn’t enough money], that will mean higher ticket costs for students,” Ozier said. “We know prom is already expensive so people won’t want to come if they have to spend $60 on a ticket.”
The prom committee remains optimistic that prom will be successful.
“We want everyone to get to come to the first-ever Blue Valley Southwest prom,” Ozier said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
