Q and A: Dane Cross Shares Experience on Debate Team
Junior Dane Cross, a member of the debate team, shares his past experiences on the debate team and plans for his upcoming season.
Q: When did you decide to join debate? Why?
A: I started sophomore year. I decided to join to gain more public speaking skills. My brother had also recommended debate to me.
Q: What motivates you to debate?
A: My partner and I make a great team, which is part of why I enjoy debate. We have a pretty good record this season. The feeling of winning motivates me to try to continue to do well.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of debate? Why?
A: The medals we get from tournaments and seeing our school team be one of the greatest is such a great feeling. The rewards from our hard work motivates me to continue to try harder.
Q: What is your least favorite part of debate? Why?
A: My least favorite part is trying to go up against a topic you have no evidence against. It’s almost a guaranteed loss, which is really frustrating. The only positive is that it can help us prepare for the future so we can do what we need to in order to solve these problems.
Q: What are you looking forward to most?
A: Trying to letter and keep a positive record to compete within the team for best partnership. Letting is my main goal for this year.
Q: Do you plan on continuing to debate in the future? Will you debate after high school?
A: I plan on finishing my high school debate career, but I do not plan on debating after I’m done with high school.
Q: Do you recommend that other students join?
A: I highly recommend joining. It’s a great class that you can learn a lot in, it’s easy to keep your grade up and has one of the best teachers. Debate is almost like one big dysfunctional family.
Q: Do you have any advice for people who may join debate?
A: Definitely go to debate camp beforehand and get a feel for what it’s for to see if debate is for you. Try to set your own views aside, create a strong bond with your partner and keep your evidence up to date
