The evolution of technology and the impact on society
Take a look around; technology is everywhere, and almost everyone uses it. Nobody focuses in on the problems it causes, just the good things it brings.
“It takes away people’s social skills,” Said business owner Chris Wright. The average percent of people who socialize more often online rather than in person is 39 percent. Keep in mind that this could in fact drastically increase as technology evolves.
“People don’t communicate the same way,”
said Wright. Almost 80 percent of people online are more comfortable with lying. Could this be a sign?
“I think it has to do with not having a face-to-face encounter,” said freshman Jamie George. “You can’t see the emotion.” It is important to have direct contact with someone, so what happens when that contact is taken away and replaced with a screen? Could our world be changing before our very eyes? Many believe so.
How is Technology beneficial to the average person? Could it be the lack of effort needed to send a text, call or email?
“It makes things a lot easier and faster,” said Wright.
16.25 million Apple iPhones were sold last quarter alone. The Apple company is a booming business: it’s overall total income is 46.3 billion dollars. This is 73 percent more than the previous quarter.
Another thing to think about is cyber-bullying.
“It has made it easier for bullies to reach their victims,” said junior John Mckinsey. One in three people have received cyber-bullying threats online, but only one in ten tell a parent or adult figure. Anyone can be bullied at any time. Over 25 percent of teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cellphones and on the internet.
“Cyber-bullying victims are more likely to have lower self esteem and to consider suicide,” said business editor Richard Webster. This is a up and rising issue, and the only person who has the power to prevent it, is you.
