The bright lights flashed. The beat of the swanky music thumped through the speakers of the Lincoln Center. Fashion editors, celebrities and socialites sat positioned in their chairs, spectating as models clad in the latest fashions strutted down the catwalk, striking poses for photographers.
At this Spring 2013 New York Fashion Week, the latest clothing wasn’t the only thing that had the fashion and beauty industry buzzing. The new beauty trends observed at runway shows such as Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Marc by Marc Jacobs, among others caught the attention of industry insiders.
Whether it’s New York, Paris, Milan or London, clothing isn’t the only important component of Fashion Week. Each spring and fall, makeup artists will do models’ makeup to correspond with the clothing for the upcoming season.
“Trends in the beauty world include berry, emerald and pearls,” professional makeup artist and beauty journalist Janine James said.
One trend consistently seen at shows such as Helmut Lang, Alexander Wang and Tommy Hilfiger is luminous skin.
To achieve a luminous look, try highlighter.
“Highlighters are the easiest and best way to give a radiant glow to any complexion,” professional makeup artist Diana R. said. “[Apply] to the upper cheekbones and bridge of the nose.”
To pick the perfect highlighter, find one that is a few shades lighter than the natural skin tone. For girls with fair complexions, choose a light pink highlighter. Those with a deeper skin tone should try one with a bronze tint.
Highlighters come in a variety of consistencies such as liquid, powder and cream.
“Use a powder format for an oily skin type or a cream for a dry skin type to really enhance and bring out the glow,” Diana said.
Depending on the formula, apply either with a brush, fingers or straight from the tube to get a luminous look.
The trend of berry lips has carried over from the winter season to the spring runway and showed up at the runways of Jason Wu and Carlos Miele. Models such as Karlie Kloss and Cara Delevingne swiped on a lipstick in a range of red hues from deep berry to bright strawberry.
“A berry colored lip is a simple way to add a touch of elegance in just minutes,” James said.
A matte berry lip can be great for a day look in a lighter shade or nice for a night out in a darker hue. With such a bold lip color, application is key. To get a nice clean application, apply the lip color using a lip brush. This will give greater control than applying from the tube.
Freshman Lexie Penichet, who makes beauty videos on YouTube under the name CraszyWildcat1217, gave her advice on wearing the deep lip color trend.
“When wearing a berry lip color, you want your lips to be the focal point of the look. That means keeping your eyes neutral is a must,” Penichet said. “As for blush, you want a blush that will add color to your cheeks because the berry lip can make your complexion appear [paler]. Go for more of a dark red or pink blush.”
Recently named Pantone’s Color of 2013, emerald has popped up in not only the fashion world, but also on the runway of Marc by Marc Jacobs.
“Deep green eyeliner is a subtle way to add some depth to any eyeshadow look,” James said.
Emerald eyeliner traced along the bottom lash line can complement a smoky brown eye look. For those who want a subtler way to wear emerald, try using an emerald nail polish. Those feeling bolder can try emerald mascara applied to the bottom and top lashes.
Whether one is a beauty enthusiast wanting to try the latest off the runway beauty looks, or someone with a simpler routine who just wants an update, there’s a way for everyone to incorporate this spring’s beauty trends into her everyday makeup routine
