It’s Friday night and the bleachers are packed full of students decked out in green and chanting for the basketball team. The small forward and guard/forward can be seen swishing shots and grabbing the rebounds; juniors, Donnell Bronson and Dominique O’Conner are varsity players on the basketball team.
This duo can be seen practicing every day after school and spending the weekends working on their technique and agility. Both the players also play on a summer basketball team and travel for basketball. Basketball has been in their life for over nine years, and Bronson and O’Conner intend to pursue basketball in college as well.
“What I love about basketball is that it pushes me out of my comfort zone and makes me competitive,” junior Donnell Bronson said.
The basketball team has played teams such as Bishop Miege, Gardner, and Topeka Seaman. The basketball team will have played 22 games, not including tournaments, by March 10th.
“The Blue Valley game is my favorite so far, only because the feeling of the crowd was the real reason why I did as good as I did,” junior Dominique O’Conner said. “I love Southwest.”
Both of the players spend hours every week playing basketball and perfecting their game. The games are typically on friday nights and the student sections can be found with waves of green and black t-shirts and screaming fans.
“I love the feeling I get before every game, the crowd, and the competition the other team gives.” O’Conner said.
The two have been basketball bro’s every since they met during sixth grade, and will continue to play their senior year together.
“If I could describe Donnell in one word it would be baller” O’Conner said.
Donnell and Dominique intend on finishing out the season strong and are determined to boost the current record of the basketball team.
