New in the Library

The library has a new way to turn in books, it is called the Awesome Box.

Although school started almost two months ago, many students still have no idea what the Awesome Box is, where it is, or even how to use it.

“I have no idea what it is,” sophomore Claire Nelson said. “Obviously, it is a box, but, what does it do?”

The Awesome Box, started by Harvard, is a simple way for students to recommend books to other students. If a book is a great book, and it has all the qualities of awesome, a student can simply drop it in the Awesome Box instead of the regular return box.

One of the librarians, Lindsey Hogan, introduced the box to Southwest.

“Our idea was, to come up with a display that would be interactive and that was kind of constantly changing, and that also kind of reached out through social media,” Hogan said.

Then the librarians will scan the barcode and the book is put out on the widget on the library website and twitter.

“We have actually had a lot more books than we thought we would,” Hogan said.  “There has been a pretty high turnover.”

Hogan had learned about the box about a year and a half ago. The box is only now being introduced due to some problems that occurred while trying to set it up.

“It’s kind of a dorky problem,” Hogan said. “I don’t know how to explain it.”

Long story short, the system that the library uses didn’t connect well with the system for lhe Awesome Box.

The library believes that it will be able to use The Awesome Box, to connect with a lot more of students on Twitter.

“A lot of people who don’t read much are on social media,” sophomore Reese Crawford said. “It’s a great way to reach the distant kids who are gliding through english classes.”

Even though some students, such as Crawford, think the Awesome Box is a good idea, others are still unsure if they will ever use it.

“I just feel like, the books I read, they are different than what other people read,” sophomore Alexis Collichio said. “I don’t really want to share what I read with others.”

According to Harvard, there are around 310 Awesome Boxes in the U.S.  Southwest is the first library in the area to use the Awesome Box, but Hogan hopes to see the box spread to other libraries in the future.

“I’ve had a lot of people from the other libraries tell me they really liked the idea of it,” Hogan said.
