The current trend of twerking: student thoughts

Every year the trends change, sometimes several times a year. One of the most increasingly popular trends is the dance called twerking.

According to the Associated Press, the Oxford English Dictionary recently decided that twerking needed to be added during their recent quarterly update. This was specifically because of Miley Cyrus’s performance at the Video Music Awards and the increasing popularity of the term.

Junior  Jori Herman is aware of the trend but does not like or approve of it. She also has some very strong views on the thought.

“I think it’s getting overrated and is a dying trend,” Herman said. “I do not plan on doing it at homecoming because I do not want to get made fun of for that hoodrat banter. I think Miley [referring to the Video Music Awards incident on Aug. 25] needs to learn how to wear more clothes in a publicly broadcast setting. It should not have been added to the dictionary because in a couple months no one will even care about twerking anymore.”

Sophomore Logan Wassall does not like twerking either.

“I don’t know exactly what twerking is,” Wassall said. “When I think of it, I think of Miley Cyrus. It is gross and disgusting. It has no reason to be added to the dictionary.”

Junior Vanessa Shields is also very strong in her views against twerking. She has a different view than most people on the Miley Cyrus incident.

“It is just the same as “yolo”. That has died out now, but it was still added to the dictionary last year. I think it [twerking] is simply an excuse to act slutty or provocatively. I will not be doing it at homecoming because I don’t know how nor do I want to know,” Shields stated. “I think Miley Cyrus did it because it’s a call for help, because of her emotional issues right now with Liam Hemsworth [with their broken off engagement]. It should most definitely not have been added to the dictionary.”
